Probiotics

Probiotic Bacteria

Probiotics are often useful for specific medical conditions (diarrhea, etc.) or may be used preventively in conjunction with antibiotic therapy. We use the following "dot-phrases" in our electronic medical record:

.probiotics Probiotics are helpful bacteria or yeasts that help in balancing the environment in the gut. There are many different types, and it is not yet clear which are better for which conditions. Fermented foods (yogurt, kefir, etc.) are a dietary source of these "friendly" organisms.
Probiotics have been shown to help irritable bowel syndrome, treat diarrhea caused by antibiotics, viral infection, traveling, or chemotherapy, and to help prevent vaginal infections as well as bladder infections. They also have a role in preventing eczema, respiratory infections in children, and many other problems.
A good probiotic will have plenty of live organisms by the time you take it, will have the beneficial organisms and no contaminating organisms, and will be able to disintegrate and release the bacteria in the intestines. Good products will have an expiration date on the label.
In general, the recommended dose will be at least 1 billion organisms per day, up to as high as 100 billion or even more.
Brands that were tested and approved by consumerlab.com include: Jarrow, GNC Ultra Probiotic Complex, New Chapter, Puritan's Pride, and Florastor.
For infants, choose a brand that has lots of bifidus as well as acidophilus. Powdered primadophilus (found in the refrigerated section at a natural foods store or even Fred Meyers) is a great choice for kids.

Probiotics should not be used in acute pancreatitis and should be used with caution in people who are hospitalized and critically ill.

Saccharomyces

Saccharomyces boulardii is a probiotic yeast which can be used while on antibiotics. A cheaper version is to use saccharomyces cerevisiae, which is GRAS (generally regarded as safe) for food sources.

We use this "dot-phrase" in our electronic medical record:

While you need to be on antibiotics, take Baker's yeast (Red Star yeast from the baking aisle in the grocery store!) 1/4 teaspoon twice a day in a glass of warm water or in food. Saccharomyces from the baker's yeast is a "friendly" yeast and competes with candida and C. diff and other bad bugs for food.

Saccharomyces boulardii is also available as a dietary supplement. Take at least 10 billion organisms a day for the time you're on the antibiotics and 1-2 weeks after. Two good brands are Florastor and Jarrow. The Florastor dose would be 250 mg twice a day (one pill twice a day).

After the antibiotics, take acidophilus 1 - 10 billion organisms per day for 3-6 months.
