Common Useful Remedies

Breaking into a new field of healthcare is often diffcult, especially if one has prior commitments and little time to devote to learning a new profession. But adding to your knowledge of homeopathy can be a very rewarding endeavor. The inexpensive cost of adding a few remedies in your field may boost your patients’ satisfaction immeasurably! This article will introduce you to a few remedies that really shine in healthcare, and are organ-specific or condition-specific enough to use in general practice.
Let’s talk about GERD first. Acid reflux, especially if the individual has had it long enough that they have a hoarse voice or sore throat from the reflux. Phosphorus is a polycrest that is organ-specific for the esophagus. It can be used to help simple reflux all the way to esophageal cancer. Depending on the severity of the pain/reflux, start with a 30C after a meal. Sometimes a few doses will keep the acid from becoming a problem ever again. If the 30C works but fades after a few tries, move up to a 200C. This dose is usually sufficient to keep the individual from reaching for any other medicine! You can eat mint and chocolate after 6pm any time you like!
Another remedy that is very handy, especially for addictions (alcohol, food, drugs, sex, gambling), is Nux-vomica. It has clinical trials that have shown its effectiveness and is a common remedy around the world for this use. But it’s not just addiction. Students overworked at midterms or finals? Overstudy is a common use for Nux, as well as for the hangover that follows overindulging! In the homeless shelter where I work, we use Nux often once a day. For those coming off drugs or alcohol, the cravings can be very difficult to control. With Nux, it is rare to have someone relapse with a good strong potency. Once a veteran told me he’d gotten upset and went into a liquor store, pulled out his Nux bottle and took a dropperful, while looking for a bottle to buy. After about 5 or 10 seconds, after reaching for a bottle from the shelf, stopped and realized he didn’t need it after all. This remedy can be used anywhere from a repetitive 3C to a much strong 10M or 50M (recommended only once you know your material!).
Often, in the work I do, I see people with PTSD, many of them veterans. When they come in and sit down, they often are too excited or upset to speak a coherent sentence. I learned after 4 or 5 years at the city clinic in San Francisco, if you want to get the case, you have to have some coherence. I started giving this people a dose of Aconite. I’ve become quite the expert at sussing out which person needed this remedy, and within 30 seconds, they’d be finishing their sentences, explaining what it was that bothered them. The amygdala goes into the fight-or-flight mode, and Aconite settles the sympathetic nervous system. It really is amazing to see it happen. Often the veterans I see need a small bottle of this remedy to carry with them once they become familiar with the remedy picture.
Calcarea Carbonica is a wonderful remedy for children especially. Many a child has entered my office with the mother complaining she isn’t growing. The next visit, not only is the child over stranger anxiety, but exploring me and the office. Older children need new clothing, as they often grow that much in one month! It’s not that the child needs calcium, but that the child’s body needs to use it properly. This remedy is one of our finest polycrests, great for childhood fears, glands, and structural deficits. It was the second remedy my child had – after teething tablets. He had smelly feet at 6 months. One dose of Calc, and his feet never smelled again!
One remedy I use quite often, especially in strained backs, is Calcarea Phosphorica. It has a wonderful affinity to the everyday muscle pulls, neck stiffness, and nerve twinges that come from asking our bodies to do things they cannot reasonably be expected to accomplish. This can be anything from moving (packing, lifting boxes, etc), to a fall or sports injury. This remedy is often used in conjunction with a few others. If you have a skateboarder or snowboarder, keep it handy.
In homeopathy, there are groups of remedies that can be used in sequence to overcome an injury. Often the injury will be a fall, a bone break, or a tendon or ligament damage. Here we start with Arnica, the most used remedy of the lay person and the homeopath! After the injury, Arnica will be given as soon as possible. I usually start with a 1M if an ER visit is not required. If it is, a 10M would be indicated if the person is in considerable pain or hemorrhage. Many nurses have been known to dose patients in the ER! It has also been given in many natural disasters, as it brings people out of shock.
Once the immediate injury has stabilized, the injury will feel different to the person; they may say ‘The stabbing pain is gone, now it is sore.’ This indicates the Arnica has done its work, and you can move on to the next remedy. That will depend on the injury. Most fractures need Symphytum, tendons and ligaments need Ruta (or Symphytum), and those that hurt to move but feel better after motion is continued, need Rhus Toxicodendron (Rhus-tox for short). The second remedy, after given, will also change the experience of the patient. They may say the soreness is gone, or one particular pain has abated. This may take a few hours, a day, or a week. The remedy can be repeated until there is no evidence (from the lips of the person experiencing the injury) that there is movement. Usually a 200C is plenty strong enough.
The last remedy is Calcarea Carbonica, the remedy mentioned above, usually in a 30C. Occasionally I use Calc-phos instead, depending on the person and the injury; it sort of ties the case up nicely, and finishes the structural repair that was begun.
If these remedies come in handy for you, and you are curious about a particular condition, buy yourself a Materia Medica online. Open the book to the chapter that interests you. Scan the symptoms, and see what remedies have an affinity to that organ or system. Of course, these are generalizations, as we usually look for a constitutional remedy for the person that covers all of the person, not just one organ. But it’s a start!
